Infinite Mana: Type 4 / DC10 and Pai Gow / Booster Blitz

Remove mana from the equation and Pack Wars becomes a game of pure interaction and explosive threats. Type 4 hands you infinite mana and one spell per turn; Pai Gow / Booster Blitz — codified by Wizards itself — distills Magic into rapid-fire three-card duels.

Type 4 / DC10

Infinite mana, one spell per turn

Lands are gone. Everyone has unlimited mana of every color. The single bottleneck — one spell cast per turn — is what keeps the format from ending instantly.

Draw your pack as a hand and play. With infinite mana, a one-mana, two-damage spell is worthless and a nine-mana board wipe is premium. Valuation flips entirely toward raw impact.

Bypass the gate (not “casting a spell”)

  • Cycling triggers
  • Pitch spells
  • Foretell

  • Activated abilities
One spell per turn — but abilities and alt-costs slip past the gate.

The single-spell rule

No player may cast more than one spell per turn. Anything that is not “casting a spell” — activated abilities, special actions, alternate costs — bypasses the limit, which is the whole strategic engine.

02

Card valuation

The alt-cost taxonomy

Premium Type 4 cards are the ones that do powerful things without “casting a spell” — or that sink infinite mana into a game-ending effect.

MechanicUtilityWhy it matters
Cycling triggersSupremeCycling is an activated ability, not a spell — cards like Decree of Silence fire their triggers for free, all turn.
Pitch spellsSupremeForce of Will and Force of Negation protect your threats on the opponent’s turn without paying mana.
OverloadMaximumInfinite mana means Cyclonic Rift and friends always hit their asymmetrical, board-clearing mode.
EvokeHighAn alternate cost: bank an immediate ETB effect (Mulldrifter) while using mana to dodge the sacrifice.
ForetellHighA special action, not a spell — exile now, cast a banked threat on a later turn.
AwakenSituationalIf lands are in play, infinite mana pays huge Awaken costs for instant lethal creatures.
Mechanics that bypass the one-spell-per-turn limit in Type 4.

Cap your X

Kicker, Multikicker, Entwine, and any X cost are maxed instantly. Groups usually errata X to a cap (5 or 10) so a single Fireball doesn’t end the game on the spot. Indestructible creatures become the real win conditions — they survive the constant board wipes.

03

Booster Blitz

Pai Gow Magic — the official minigame

Named for the tile game of building multiple hands, Pai Gow distills Magic into a series of three-card micro-battles. Wizards printed it as “Booster Blitz” in Zendikar Rising.

Each micro-game starts at 5 life with infinite mana of every color. The three cards in a pile are your whole hand and library — you never draw more, so you cannot deck out. Activated abilities are limited to one use per card per turn to stop infinite loops.

You · 4 piles × 3 cardsFirst to 2 wins
pile vs pile
Opponent · 4 piles × 3 cards
Four piles, pile-vs-pile — first player to take two games wins the match.

The distribution phase

  1. 1Open a pack and discard the basic land and token (fourteen playable cards from a Draft booster).
  2. 2Build piles of three. The community version makes five piles; official Booster Blitz makes four and discards the rest.
  3. 3For 14-card Play Boosters, build two piles of three and two of four — three-card piles only ever fight other three-card piles.
  4. 4Each game, you choose which of your opponent’s piles they must play — and they choose yours. Fastest builder plays first in game one.

Winning the match

The first player to win two games takes the match — you build four piles but play at most three games. A locked board with no lethal is a draw, and whoever loses a game is on the play in the next one.

04

Pile heuristics

How to build winning piles

The skill ceiling is combinatorial: you pick your opponent’s pile and they pick yours, so the game is about disguising strength, reading their build, and hiding your blanks behind self-sufficient threats.

ArchetypeFunctionHow to deploy
Auto-WinsDeal exactly 5 damage instantlyIsolate them — two in one pile is wasted (e.g. Lava Axe, Charging Monstrosaur).
Synergistic pairsCombine into a lethal threatGroup them: a creature plus a pump that grants flying and exactly 5 evasive damage.
Interactive spellsCounters and instant removalProtect an Auto-Win, or park in a weak pile to steal a draw from a stronger one.
Dead draft chaffCard draw, mill, land rampTotally blank here — hide them alongside a self-sufficient win condition.
The four archetypes you balance across your piles.

Because the opponent chooses which pile you play, you are not sequencing your own piles — you are hiding strength. Make your strongest pile look unremarkable so they hand it to you, and read their distribution to hand them their worst three cards. Then think in exact damage: Explosive Welcome deals 5 to one target and 3 to another — on the play you can hit the opponent for 5 and yourself for 3 and win before they act. A pile built around Jadzi plus two throwaways is unbreakable because the weak cards are just discard fodder that bounces the threat back to safety.

The Pai Gow Cube

For unlimited replays, build a curated landless cube: at least ~45% creatures so combat stays the win condition, no draw or ramp, and heavy graveyard, bounce, and combat-trick synergy. Deal fifteen cards each and play — including a Two-Headed Giant team variant.

FAQ

Common questions

What makes a card good in Type 4?
Impact per spell, not mana value. Board wipes, huge X effects (capped), indestructible threats, and anything that uses an activated ability, pitch cost, or special action to dodge the one-spell-per-turn rule.
Is Booster Blitz the same as Pai Gow Magic?
Effectively yes. Pai Gow Magic is the community name; Booster Blitz is the official ruleset Wizards printed as a minigame card in Zendikar Rising. The main difference is four official piles vs five community piles.
Why is my opponent’s card draw useless against me in Pai Gow?
With only three cards and no library to draw from, draw, mill, and ramp do nothing. Those cards are “dead chaff” you should hide behind a self-sufficient Auto-Win.
