Standard Rotation, in Depth

One mechanic defines Standard, and it has been redesigned more than once. How rotation works today, how it got here, and the question everyone actually searches: what rotates next?

Today

How rotation is defined now

No blocks, no exceptions clauses — just the oldest four premier sets leaving each fall.

Modern rotation is mechanically simple: when the fall premier set releases, the four oldest premier sets in Standard rotate out simultaneously. Premier sets are the main expansions — supplemental products are not Standard-legal unless explicitly stated, which is what makes Foundations’ “Standard-legal supplemental set” status a deliberate exception rather than the rule.

The Foundations exception

Foundations (Nov 2024) is Standard-legal by design and exempt from the normal fall rotation — the announced window runs until at least 2029. When counting what leaves each fall, count premier sets only.

The evergreen question

What rotates next, and when

The single most-searched Standard question. This section is refreshed every year.

The next rotation lands with this year’s fall set release: on that day, the four oldest premier sets in the format leave together. The grid below is generated from our card database — the highlighted sets are the next ones out the door.

Digital rotates first

MTG Arena and Magic Online apply rotation on the set’s digital patch day, several days before the tabletop release Friday. Plan ladder decks accordingly — renewal season on Arena also brings rotation-themed events and reward catch-ups.

The lineage

A short history of the mechanic itself

Rotation has been redesigned roughly once a decade — each time toward simplicity.

EraUnit of rotationThe shape of the format
Block era3-set blocksBlocks entered and left together; the fall expansion anchored each block
Two-set blocks2-set blocksSmaller blocks, twice-yearly rotation experiments (the Battle for Zendikar era)
Three-and-OneSet yearsBlocks retired; sets rotate as yearly cohorts after the 2018 reset
Setless, three-yearOldest 4 premier setsSince 2023: no blocks at all — each fall the four oldest premier sets leave
How the unit of rotation has changed over Magic’s history.

The through-line: every redesign removed structure. Three-set blocks gave way to two-set blocks, blocks gave way to the Three-and-One model’s set years, and the 2023 change abandoned even those cohorts for a plain “oldest four premier sets” rule with a three-year lifespan. What survived every redesign is the fall reset itself.

The 2023 move to three years was explicitly a health intervention — part of WotC’s “revitalizing Standard” plan to make decks last longer, soften the cost of staying current, and pull tabletop players back to the format after the pandemic-era slump.

FAQ

Common questions

Do all four sets rotate on the same day?
Yes — rotation is a single event per year. The oldest four premier sets leave together the day the fall set releases (digital patch day online, release Friday in paper).
What happens to my rotated Arena cards?
You keep them — they remain playable in Alchemy’s extended formats, Historic, Explorer/Pioneer queues, and casual modes. Renewal-season rewards are designed to cushion the transition into the new Standard.
Are supplemental sets ever Standard-legal?
Only when explicitly stated, and Foundations is the headline case — a supplemental-style set made Standard-legal long-term on purpose. Everything else (Commander decks, Masters sets, Universes Beyond supplements) follows its own stated legality.

Standard right now, oldest first — the highlighted premier sets rotate out with the next fall release; core sets like Foundations are rotation-exempt.
